China broadens injury insurance in emerging jobs
As of July 1, the program now covers 10 additional provincial-level regions and several major platform companies, including ride-hailing provider Didi Chuxing. This expansion builds on the original trial, which already included seven regions and seven companies.
The ministry stated that by 2026, the initiative will be rolled out nationwide to encompass all provincial-level regions and nearly all platform-based businesses in ride-hailing, express delivery, and intra-city freight services. By 2027, coverage is expected to extend to platform companies in other industries as well.
First launched in July 2022, the pilot program has already provided occupational injury insurance to more than 12.3 million workers in non-traditional employment roles. These protections are intended to ensure support for workers such as couriers and drivers in the event of serious on-the-job accidents.
